Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)

This adds additional functionality to IP, such as, providing diagnostics and error messages, e.g., receiver cannot be reached, requested port does not exist, or a datagram exceeded the maximum number of redirects.

Tools like ping and traceroute are built using ICMP.
